Launch of the 1st International Conference on Climate Mitigation, Energy, and Sustainability (ICCMES 2026) in Amedi
With the aim of advancing comprehensive pathways towards a low-carbon and resilient future, and under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Ari Adel, President of Duhok Polytechnic University, and in the presence of the representative of the Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research of the Kurdistan Regional Government, the representative of the Head of the Organizational Office of the Kurdistan Democratic Party and Head of Branch 18, the Deputy Governor of Duhok, the Advisor to the Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research of the Kurdistan Regional Government, as well as a number of university vice presidents, researchers, and academics from higher education institutions in the Kurdistan Region and Iraq and from 10 countries, the first day of the 1st International Conference on Climate Mitigation, Energy, and Sustainability (ICCMES 2026) was held, Tuesday, 6 October 2026. The conference is organized by Technical Institute of Amedi under the theme:
“Advancing Comprehensive Pathways Towards a Low-Carbon and Resilient Future.”
The opening ceremony commenced with a minute of silence in tribute to the souls of the martyrs, followed by the national anthem and the recitation of Al-Fatiha. Prof. Dr. Ari Adel, President of the University and Honorary Chair of the Conference, then delivered a welcoming address, emphasizing the importance of environmental research and the University’s sustained support for such academic initiatives. Subsequently, Dr. Amir Abdulrahman Chali, representative of the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research in the Kurdistan Region, delivered the Ministry’s address, highlighting the role of universities in developing scientific solutions to climate-related challenges.
In another segment of the opening ceremony, Prof. Dr. Ahmed Fattah, Conference Chair, provided a brief overview of the conference objectives, themes, and main sectors. The programme also featured a documentary showcasing Duhok Polytechnic University, together with a presentation highlighting the scientific directions of the conference sponsors.
The scientific activities of the first day subsequently continued with two keynote lectures delivered by distinguished keynote speakers and researchers:
First Keynote Lecture: Delivered by Prof. Dr. Aziz Abdullah Barzinji from Soran University on the topic “Green Nanotechnology for Energy and Environmental Sustainability.”
Second Keynote Lecture: Delivered by Prof. Dr. Abdulsamad Ahmed from Tishk International University on the topic “Universities as Engines of Climate Action: Integrating Sustainability into Higher Education and Research.”
At the conclusion of the programme, certificates of appreciation were presented to the keynote speakers, conference committees, and sponsoring companies ( DARO - Alakhawayn ). The activities of the first day continued through the evening scientific sessions, while the activities of the second day are scheduled to continue along the same lines.
