About Us

The Technical Institute of Duhok is the oldest higher education center in Duhok City, established in 1988. Since its founding, the institute has played a vital role in the city's development and in enhancing the quality of life for its residents. It operates as a branch of Duhok Polytechnic University and is affiliated with the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research in the Kurdistan Region.

Following the 1991 uprising, when the Iraqi government withdrew its administrative presence from Kurdistan, the institute remained steadfast in delivering quality education. It empowered Kurdish educators to take the lead in instruction and academic development. A significant morale boost came from the support of Ba’arey Kurdistan, particularly the visit of the PDK leader, President Masoud Barzani, which reinforced the institute’s educational mission.

After the formation of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), the institute continued to thrive, particularly during the third, fourth, and fifth KRG cabinets. These administrations supported the institute by constructing new facilities, launching new departments, upgrading equipment, and providing financial resources.

Since its inception, the institute has graduated over 3,264 students with diploma degrees across various fields, including:

  • Mechanics
  • Building and Construction
  • Surveying
  • Information Technology
  • Health Sciences
  • Social Health
  • Dental Hygiene
  • Pharmacy
  • Midwifery

These programs follow a two-year curriculum combining theoretical education with practical training. The institute also offers summer internships to strengthen students’ professional experience.

The Technical Institute of Duhok is committed to maintaining high educational standards and developing its faculty. Many instructors have pursued postgraduate studies (Master’s and Ph.D.) both within and outside the region.

In response to the city’s evolving needs and the availability of qualified staff, the IT Department was established and saw its first graduating class in the summer of 2014. In the 2012–2013 academic year, the Preventive Dental and Surveying departments were closed and replaced with new departments in Road Construction and Dental Industry.

Due to rising enrollment, the administration launched several expansion projects. A new three-story building was constructed, featuring a modern library and a club for students and staff. Several facilities and workshops were also renovated to enhance the learning environment.

Substantial investments have been made in laboratory equipment, including the acquisition of new computers for IT labs and specialized tools for the Road Construction and Building and Construction departments.
