Summer School on Biomedical Imaging with Deep Learning (BILD 2025)

Welcome/Willkommen (de)/أهلاً وسهلاً (ar) to the 1st Edition of the Arab-German Summer School on Biomedical Imaging with Deep Learning (BILD)

Join us as we embark on this journey between 1st and 5th September in Tunis, Tunisia to shape the future of AI in Medicine.

Register

The deadline for registration is 14th July 2025 at 10AM CEST.

BILD 2025 is organized under the umbrella of the Strategic Arab-German Network for Affordable and Democratized AI in Healthcare (SANAD), uniting academic excellence and technological innovation across borders. This year’s edition is organized by the Albarqouni Lab at the University Hospital Bonn and the University of Bonn. We are proud to partner with leading institutions in the region—Lebanese American University, University of Tunis El Manar, and Duhok Polytechnic University — to deliver a truly international learning experience. Over five intensive days in Tunis, you will explore cutting-edge deep-learning techniques for medical imaging through expert lectures, hands-on labs, and collaborative case studies. Engage with peers and faculty from Germany, Lebanon, Iraq, and Tunisia as you develop practical skills in building and deploying AI models for real-world healthcare challenges. We look forward to an inspiring week of interdisciplinary exchange and the shared commitment to advancing affordable, life-saving AI in medicine.

BILD Objectives

  1. Innovative Educational Modules
Design and deliver academic content that integrates cutting-edge research with practical exercises in constrained environments (e.g., mobile ultrasound and federated learning), tailored for under-resourced settings in the MENA region.
  2. Knowledge Transfer & Research Collaboration
Engage 50 students and recent graduates, along with 10 faculty members from Germany, Lebanon, Iraq, and Tunisia in workshops, co-supervised projects, and regular exchange meetings to foster sustainable collaboration.

What You’ll Learn

  • Python Programming: The most widely used language in AI and deep learning.
  • Mathematics & Statistics: Core tools to understand learning algorithms.
  • Analytical Thinking: Essential for problem-solving in medical AI applications.

About SANAD

The SANAD project is a strategic Arab–German academic network funded by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). Its mission is to promote low-cost, human-centric AI solutions for healthcare and medical imaging in low-resource environments. It emphasizes open-source development, ethical AI deployment, and cross-border academic exchange.

About the Albarqouni Lab

Located at the University Hospital Bonn and part of Helmholtz AI, the Albarqouni Lab was founded in 2020 under the leadership of Dr. Shadi Albarqouni. The lab’s research focuses on:

  • Computational medical imaging,
  • Federated learning for healthcare,
  • Affordable, context-aware AI in medicine.
